Hair Loss
While losing 50 to 100 strands of hair a day is considered normal, losing more than that may result in bald patches or generalised thinning of our hair. In some patients, while their hair loss is within the usual range, their new hair growth rate is not enough to replace this normal loss. Either way, these are situations when hair loss potentially becomes abnormal. If the hair loss is causing you distress, do come and speak with our doctor. We may have some solutions for you!
Hair loss in men
In men, some of the common treatable causes of hair loss include:
* androgenetic alopecia ( male pattern hair loss )
* alopecia areata ( resulting from your immune system attacking and damaging your own hair follicles )
* telogen effluvium ( temporary disruption of the hair cycle from physical or emotional stress
* scalp conditions, such as fungal or bacterial infections
* nutritional deficiencies, such as iron, zinc or Vit D
* systemic conditions, such as thyroid, liver or kidney disease, or autoimmune conditions such as SLE (lupus).
Hair loss in women
The common causes of hair loss are similar in women.
Alopecia androgenetica can also occur in women, but women tend to present with thinning of hair around the crown, as opposed to men, who often present with receding anterior (frontal) hair lines.
Telogen effluvium following childbirth is common in women. Treatment may not be required but if it seems to persist beyond 4 to 6 months, review with a doctor may be advisable.
As it is usually easier and more effective to slow or stop hair loss than to regain lost hair, it is advisable to seek medical advice early if you suspect yourself of having a problem with hair loss.
